Okay, we will admit that we are not very knowledgeable in this area....other than which is the best okra at the Los Ranchos growers market. So this section will include people that have been nominated by growers in the area.

My primary nomination is Sue Brawley of the Village of Los Ranchos Growers Market as she has been working tirelessly for years to make the market experience wonderful (great local food, entertainment, and educational experiences..not to mention great dried apple slices). I also have to nominate Susan Keith and Ann Simon of the MRCOG Agribusiness Task Force for their work in promoting agricultural products over the years and organizing informative and educational workshops.

The following people were nominated by others that I respect and know that these nominations are truly people making a difference in the sustainable food community.

1) Monte Skaarsgard - Owner, Los Poblanos Organics is a 12-acre farm located on the historic Los Poblanos Ranch in carrotsthe beautiful Rio Grande River Valley in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque. They offer a work share program where you can spend 2.5 hours in the field or in the store for discounts or a share of produce.

2) Brett Bakker - Field Inspector for the NM Organic Commodity Commission. The NMOCC is an independent agency of New Mexico State government, charged with regulation and promotion of organic agriculture. Regulation includes organic certification and registration, as well as oversight of enforcement and compliance with organic statutes. Promotional activities include workshops, conferences, speakers, informational tables and providing promotional materials as well as individual cplantonsultation with producers. Brett is a pioneer in preserving "Heirloom Seeds".

3) Joren Viers - Agent for the Bernalillo County Extension Service dedicated to bringing agricultural information to Bernalillo County farmers, ranchers and related industries including how to test, determine different types of soils, some nutritional (fertilization) requirements of different crops, and how to interpret a soil test, irrigation needs, pest management/pesticide safety, and how to prepare produce to sell and market. Joren is also a local grower.

4) Evelyn Lozak - Founding member of the Corrales Growers Market.

5) Eric Garretson - Founding member of the Downtown Growers Market

We thank all of the nominees for their work in our community and making significant contributions to our food sustainability.
