11/8 - Energy industry reps discuss "smart grid" in Albuquerque - Representatives from some 200 electric utilities and technology companies nationwide are meeting in Albuquerque this week to discuss a "smart" electric grid.

11/8 - Campbell Ranch recognized by Build Green NM - Build Green New Mexico, a program of the Home Builders of Central New Mexico, has awarded developer Campbell Corporation an Exceptional Sustainable Community certification for its Campbell Ranch Communities housing development in the East Mountains near Albuquerque.

6/16 - Mayor Chavez announced his plan to stop adding to landfills by 2030 by increasing recycling and generating energy from the waste materials.

5/20 - 5 Cities That Are Greener Than You Think - Along with roughly half a million people, Albuquerque, NM, is home to Sandia National Laboratories, a hotbed for research in geothermal, solar, wind and other cutting-edge technologies.

Tesla2/19 - Tesla Motors announced Monday that it has chosen Albuquerque as the site for its first factory to build fully electric sedans. Yeah!!! We Won. "The WhiteStar plant will employ 400 people, and Governor Richardson is glad to report they will be "high wage" jobs that pay between $24,000 and $100,000 a year, and have "excellent benefits and stock options." 2/8 - 100 Billion Gallons Saved Through Conservation - Since 1996, conservation efforts by Water Utility Authority customers have succeeded in saving some 100 billion gallons of water, according to Authority figures released today.

1/12 - Albuquerque City Councilor Martin Heinrich, recentlyMartin Heinrich elected Chair of the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority, is pleased to announce the raising of the rebate amount available for converting from high-flow toilets to low-flow toilets for 2007 to $150 for each toilet for all our customers. Run, don't walk...this rebate will gradually go away.

12/28 - Governor Richardson signed his new Climate Change Executive Order to reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions in NM by 267 Million Metric Tons based on recommendations from his Climate Change Advisory Group. (Contrast this action with Gov. Perry in Texas who is rushing through permits for 15 coal plants using old technology that will dump massive amounts of CO2 in the atmosphere...are we lucky or what?)

12/6 - In London today, Mayor Martin J. Chávez accepted the 2006 World Leadership Award on behalf of Albuquerque citizens and their efforts toward water conservation. The 2006 World Leadership Award was given to Albuquerque for Sustainable Water Management planning. 11/17 - Okay...wanna be proud of Albuquerque? Watch the mayor's state of the city address. And Yes, he mentions the importance of global warming initiatives and he is "walking the talk".

11/15 - Mayors don't wait for Washington on warming - Some 320 U.S. mayors are working to reach the Kyoto goals for their cities. The mayors' gathering was hosted in part by the filmmaker and environmentalist Robert Redford, who also runs the Sundance Film Festival in in Park City, Utah. Albuquerque has cut greenhouse gas emissions by 67 percent compared to 1990 levels, Mayor Marty Chavez reported.

11/1 - Governor announces Clean Energy Plan. The Climate Change Advisory Group has made their final recommendations and Gov. Richardson has announced new initiatives for NM to become energy-independent including emission regulations for new cars and trucks, Pamela-butterflytax incentives for energy-efficient homes, energy/water conservation friendly building codes, public school energy incentives, tax credits for biodiesel and higher standards for renewable energy in utility company portfolios.

10/23 - Senator Dede Feldman named Best Elected Recycling Leader by the National Recycling Coalition - at its Congress and Expo, meeting in Atlanta, Ga, Oct. 22-25. Feldman was the sponsor of the Recycling and Illegal Dumping Act in 2005, and was the Green Zia Pollution Prevention Program in 1998. She is currently working on a solution to the state’s burgeoning electronic waste problem.

10/5 - Over 26 schools recently participated in the "International Walk to School Day". Lt. Governor Diane Denish joined the school children along ditchbanks and announced that the state will give $1M in federal money to improve walking safety. The Vecinos del Bosque Neighborhood Assoc. identified a list of safety improvements for streets, Pamela_Sunflowersidewalks and crossings.

Sandia Labs will receive $2.6M for research into solid-state lighting (LEDs) and Los Alamos Labs will receive $800K announced DOE Sec. Samuel Bodman. LEDs are 10 times more efficient, however, it is difficult to get a clean white light. Sen. Jeff Bingaman has pushed for the federal funding since 2001 based on the work of Sandia's Jerry Simmons, a tireless advocate for energy efficient light. Sen. Domenici praised DOE for making the investment in solid-state lighting research.

The city council voted 7-2 for a $3.6 Million "set aside" for energy conservation and renewable energy city projects. The "set aside" program has already provided money for LED street lights, hybrid vehicles and bio-diesel projects. Good Job... Mayor Chavez, Isaac Benton and our forward looking city council!!

 

The U.S. Department of Agriculture awarded a $68,550 grant to the New Mexico Farmers Marketing Association -- a statewide organization that assists communities in the development of growers markets through financial assistance, publicity and support services.The grant will help increase the availability of fresh produce through development of new markets and promotion of existing ones, said U.S. Sen. Pete Domenici, R-NM, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee that helps determine USDA funding, in a news release. Src: Newmexicobizjournals.com

The New Mexico Park and Ride service recorded 290,000 riders in fiscal year 2006, a 23 percent increase over last year's 230,248 and a 70 percent increase from FY 2004's 170,403 riders. In a news release, New Mexico Transportation Secretary Rhonda G. Faught says the Park and Ride numbers reinforce the department's belief that there is a strong need for public transportation in the state and a large interest in the services as gasoline prices remain high.
