Amazingly, when I first started this website a couple of years ago, I could not find any Sustainability events to go to. Now we have a wealth of interesting, informative events and it is often difficult to choose.

What a difference a little time makes....I call that progress.

Betsy Damon is an internationally acclaimed water artist who became fascinated with the human and artistic implications of "Calling upon People to Remember the Water." She will be returning from Sichuan Province, China to share insights and visions of what is possible. Bruce Noll returns from the New Mexico Humanities Council to perform another chautauqua representing Walt Whitman with poems that are appropriate for the people attending the Gathering that day.

This free permaculture gathering will include a site tour of a variety of water harvesting and forest thinning practices, including a water barn and a rolling dip. Please bring friends and children, your favorite dish to share and your finest sunhat. Please car pool and leave pets at home. Take I-40 to Exit #187 in Edgewood (25 miles east of Albuquerque and 8 miles west of Moriarty). At the off-ramp stop sign, go south two blocks to the stoplight at our huge new intersection (Smith's Grocery will be on your left). Go straight up the hill on Edgewood Road #7 and turn right in ½ mile onto Moriarty Road (gravel). Go ¼ mile to #24 and turn right into my driveway or go straight ahead down the hill and park on your left. I look forward to seeing all of you and meeting new friends! October 4-5 - FROM FIELD TO FEAST - Farmers Market - Native American and Hispanic Community Farmers show and sell the bounty of their crops at the Albuquerque Bio Park starting at 8 am on Saturday. Free admission with price of admission to Bio Park.

October 5 - Rio Grande Agricultural Land Trust Annual Harvest Fundraising Dinner held at Los Poblanos Inn. Don't miss the annual Rio Grande Agricultural Land Trust banquet this Saturday. Local growers and farmers from the Rio Grande River Valley will provide their fresh produce and meats to be prepared by new Mexico's finest chefs. Chris Pope of Zinc Wine Bar and Bistro, Mike von Blomberg of Seasons Rotisserie and Grill and Bob Peterson of Savoy will be cooking for the dinner.  The Los Poblanos Executive Chef, Jonathan Perno will also prepare a few dishes.  For More Information.

October 8 - MRCOG Agriculture Collaborative Meeting - Developing localized food and agriculture policies that help reduce carbon emissions. The City of Albuquerque's Climate Change Task Force is looking for feedback from the agriculture community on four key recommended policies and practices. We will be discussing the merits of the following:

  1. Developing controlled environment agriculture (greenhouses)
  2. Implementing a region-wide food and agriculture policy council
  3. Encouraging more backyard/patio or regional gardens
  4. and identifying ways to preserve agriculture land

Task Force members Phil Pohl, of Sandia National Laboratories, Diana Crowson, with the Village of Los Lunas, and Jay Evans, with Albuquerque Parks and Recreation will be on hand to frame the discussion and break us up into four groups to address each recommendation. So, bring your ideas and feedback and help position the region as a leader in the climate change debate. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 8th from 9 am to 10:30 am at the MRCOG offices located at 809 Copper Ave NW. beeOctober 10 - Rebuild NM sponsored workshop on Sustainable Design Practices; A Guide to LEED with Commissioning and Retro-Commissioning included. The three part workshop will guide planners, designers, architects, and construction professionals through one of the most misunderstood yet important facets of sustainable design today and will be led by Beaudin Ganze Consulting Engineers . The cost of the workshop is $175 w/ a catered lunch for the early bird signing up and paying by October 1 then  $200 after. The workshop will start at 8.30 AM and conclude at 2:00 PM pm. October 11 - FROM FIELD TO FEAST - Information Booths at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center - Community Tribal farmers and other organizations provide information to the public from 9-4. Free with admission. Children ’s Activities at the Pueblo House at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. Adobe-making workshop, plaster horno over, hands-on activities. Free with admission. 11AM-3PM

October 11 - Los Ranchos Growers' and Arts/Crafts Markets - Celebrate National Herb Day!  •  Mia Maes, cateress and Lavender Festival chef for 2007 and 2008, will be discussing cooking with herbs and sampling her great sausage made with her special herb blend. •  Tap your toes to the sounds of Celtic Music •  Discuss herb growing and cooking with herbs with various vendors.  •  Pick-up fresh and dried herbs.  Eric & Patricia, and Kay will have a wide range fresh herbs.  Ray & Mary, Sue, and Mia also have dried herbs.  •  Free recipes & coloring sheets•  Free lavender poster. October 12 - Harvest Festival and Bosque Boogie Race sponsored by The Bosque Boogie/MRGCD. 8 a.m. – Noon on the Northeast corner of Montano and Coors. This is the sixth annual Bosque Boogie race. It features a 5 and 10k runs, as well as a children’s walk. The idea is in addition to highlighting the recreational opportunities that the District provides in the Bosque and along its ditches, they want to celebrate the region’s agricultural heritage by letting farmers sell their produce and other goods at the fair.

The fair will feature informational booths from the MRGCD, Bureau of Reclamation, Farm Bureau, Corps of Engineers, City Open Space, Fish & Wildlife Service and others.There is no charge for booths or spaces for vendors. Farmers wanting to sell at the fair should call Tom at 505-256-3625.

 

October 24 - The Great Pumkin Fiesta - 9 AM–12 PM featuring Los Poblanos Farms pumpkin patch. Pick up your pumpkin for Halloween at the Growers Market, and don't forget all your winter veggies will be available too. A glass of hot cider from Java Joes will keep the cold away while you watch the pumpkin carving competition.

October 25: Energy Audits - Hands-on Workshop (Harwood Center)

Event highlights include:

‐ Discover the energy audit process based on LEED‐EB & ASHRAE standards alongside professional architects and engineers.
‐ Learn cost / benefit analysis for energy conservation measures

October 25-26 - Green Tradeshow and Conference - The producers of the International Green Ideas Show have announced their alliance with the highly successful ABQ Home and Lifestyle EXPO. The International Green Ideas Show is New Mexico’s first broad-based green consumer trade show.  It will take place squashOctober 25th & 26th at Expo New Mexico and will run semi-annually alongside the ABQ Home & Lifestyle EXPO. 

This innovative event will feature the latest in earth-friendly products and services including renewable energy, hybrid vehicles, green building, eco-fashion, socially responsible investing, water conservation, green weddings/funerals and much more. October 28 - New Mexico Solar Energy Association meeting (NMSEA.org) - Katje Erickson from Delta Third Design will give a talk about how green building designs can help achieve a 2000kW per capita global society. October 31 - NMSEA Photovoltaic Design and Installation Workshop - Five-day hands-on Photovoltaic Design and Installation Workshop.  Topics include photovoltaic components, designing and sizing a system, siting, and the configuration of stand-alone (off-grid) and grid-tie (utility-connected) systems, safety and energy efficiency.  The class installation will be north of Santa Fe.  10/31, 11/1-2, 8-9 - 8am-5pm, Albuquerque area.  New Mexico Solar Energy Association, 505-246-0400, www.nmsea.org.  $500.
